About LASIK at EyeSight Hawaii
At EyeSight Hawaii, LASIK eye surgery is performed at our award winning laser center in Honolulu, Hawaii. EyeSight Hawaii has been voted #1 for BEST Laser Eye Center year after year by readers of the Star Advertiser. Founder and chief surgeon, Dr. John Olkowski, is proud and honored to be awarded Top Doctors by his peers. If you are interested in having LASIK surgery, we offer complimentary, obligation-free LASIK consultation at our Honolulu and Kahului offices to determine if you are a candidate for LASIK eye surgery. We also offer alternatives to LASIK surgery, including PRK Surgery and Visian ICL. We invite you to come meet our EyeSight Hawaii staff, tour our laser eye center, and speak directly with our doctors about what your Laser Vision Correction options are. There are many reasons why patients choose to have LASIK surgery. One reason is that they may suffer from at least one of the following eye conditions: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or presbyopia. Others may choose to have LASIK for lifestyle reasons or to save on money and time.
“It’s been about 2 months since you performed LASIK on both of my eyes. For the first time in 35 years, I have not needed to use corrected lenses AT ALL! Distance, near, and intermediate vision are all crisp, spear, and sharp without struggling. Night driving no longer gives me anxiety due to glare, halos, and starbursts. It’s been awesome to see patients, work on the computer and iPhone, read restaurant menus and wine bottle labels without fumbling for eyeglasses. The only lenses I use are regular sunglasses. Being able to focus back and forth when driving from the dashboard to the road makes me so appreciative to this day.” – Gabe Lombard, M.D. (General Practitioner in Guam)
LASIK Eye Surgery Pre-Operative Examination
At EyeSight Hawaii, the LASIK consultation is completely complimentary and it involves three parts: a comprehensive eye exam, measurements and testing, and a LASIK consultation. The comprehensive eye exam includes a dilated eye exam, which allows the doctor to examine the back of your eyes to make sure your eyes are healthy helps determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK. Your eyeglass prescription will also be determined during the comprehensive eye exam.
During the LASIK consultation, additional measurements and testing of your eyes are necessary to measure the thickness and shape of your cornea. EyeSight Hawaii uses the VISX WaveScan measurements before every LASIK eye surgery procedure. The breakthrough VISX WaveScan maps your entire visual system, to create an advanced “fingerprint of your vision." You are probably familiar with the question “Which is better, 1 or 2?" during a standard eye exam. However, you may often be unsure if you are giving the correct answer. The WaveScan system helps to do away with this uncertainty, by generating an extremely accurate and objective measurement of your vision. This can mean better results from your LASIK eye surgery.
Following the comprehensive eye exam, measurements and testing, the doctor will be able to conclude whether LASIK, PRK or an alternative eye surgery is right for you.
LASIK Surgery with the iLASIK Technology
iLASIK combines IntraLase technology with the Advanced CustomVue procedure, for a treatment of unprecedented accuracy and effectiveness.
LASIK surgery first involves folding back a thin layer of the surface of the cornea (the front surface of the eye). Then, the VISX Star S4 IR excimer laser is used to gently and precisely reshape the remaining cornea to the desired curvature.
EyeSight Hawaii uses the most advanced, blade-free IntraLase Method to create the corneal flap. Ultra–fast pulses of laser light position microscopic bubbles at a precise depth determined by our surgeon. The laser light then moved back and forth across your eye in a uniform plane, to create rows of bubbles just beneath your corneal surface. Next, the IntraLase laser stacks bubbles around your corneal diameter at a precise angle that is customized to the shape of your eye.
For the vision correction portion of the surgery, EyeSight Hawaii uses the VISX Star S4 IR excimer laser, which has the only FDA-approved 3-Dimensional tracking system. So there is no need to worry if your eye moves, because the laser will follow. After the laser treatment, the thin corneal flap is put back into place.
LASIK Eye Surgery Post-Operative Examinations
Your post-operative exams for LASIK eye surgery are extremely important. During these eye exams, we can evaluate how your eyes are healing after your surgery. If you ever have any concerns with your LASIK surgery, we are more than happy to take a look at your eyes at any time.
We understand that many people that are considering LASIK surgery are doing their research and probably have questions about cost, pre and post-operative expectations, or questions about our doctors and facility. Some of those questions can be answered by visiting our Laser Vision Correction page.
EyeSight Hawaii offers obligation-free, complimentary PRK and LASIK consultations.
