Cataract

A cataract is a common condition in which the normally clear lens of the eye becomes discolored, clouded and hardened. The most common cause of cataracts is aging, but other causes include trauma, medications, diabetes and prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light.

CATALYS Laser

With CATALYS laser cataract surgery, our trained ophthalmologists can provide a gentle, highly customized cataract procedure with precision not achievable with traditional manual techniques.

Premium IOLs

Treatment for cataracts involves a simple eye surgery to remove the cataract and replace it with an IOL that can restore clear vision. An IOL typically focuses light better than the original cloudy lens, reducing the patient’s dependence on eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Pterygium

A pterygium most commonly occurs on the inner corner of the eye, but can also appear on the outer corner. Pterygium occurrence are more often seen in people from tropical climates and are very prevalent in Hawaii.

Intacs

Intacs are microthin prescription inserts which are implanted to reshape the cornea. Two tiny rings that are made of special biocompatible plastic permanently correct vision once they are placed in the eye. The goal of the Intacs procedure is to provide the patient with the ability to achieve improved functional vision with contact lenses or glasses and in some cases without them.

Cross-Linking

Corneal collagen cross-linking is a medical procedure that combines the use of ultra-violet (UV) light and riboflavin (vitamin B2) drops. The procedure creates new corneal collagen cross-links, results in a shortening and thickening of the collagen fibrils and leads to the stiffening of the cornea. This procedure provides options to limit the progression of this sight-threatening disease.

Cornea Transplant

People of all ages may need cornea transplants. The most common reason for a corneal transplant is long-term complications from older-style cataract surgery. Sometimes corneal transplants are done to correct injured or scarred corneas. Another reason is when a person is born with a misshapen cornea (keratoconus) that needs to be replaced so the patient can see. There are a number of different eye diseases that are cured by a cornea transplant.

Laser Vision Correction

LASIK Surgery

There are many reasons why patients choose to have LASIK surgery. One reason is that they may suffer from at least one of the following eye conditions: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or presbyopia. Others may choose to have LASIK to save on money and time.

PRK Surgery

PRK surgery is a type of laser vision correction that treats the surface of the eye. The difference between PRK vs LASIK is that unlike LASIK surgery, a corneal flap isn’t made. At EyeSight Hawaii, we use the latest technology for our pre-operative exams and vision correction procedures including LASIK and PRK surgery.

Visian ICL Surgery

Visian ICL is an alternative option for LASIK or PRK surgery. A specially designed lens that is gently placed through a tiny incision in the eye behind the iris, and in front of the natural crystalline lens in order to improve nearsightedness. Unlike LASIK or PRK Surgery, that can remove eye tissue, the Visian ICL procedure is implanted, therefore does not remove corneal tissue and does not cause dry eye syndrome.

This FDA-approved treatment takes 12 minutes in the office. Lipiflow acts to open oil glands on the eye lid margins that have become plugged. This additional oil acts to protect the tears and relieve dry eye symptoms. “Lipiflow has revolutionized the treatment of dry eye” said Dr. Olkowski.

Other Therapies

Meibomian Gland Evaluation

Loss of Meibomian Glands (small oil glands at the edge of the eyelids) is the leading cause of DRY EYES.  We offer multiple advance techniques to evaluate and treat blocked Meibomian Glands.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness for people over 60 years old. But blindness from glaucoma can often be prevented with early treatment. When glaucoma develops, usually you don’t have any early glaucoma symptoms and the disease progresses slowly. In this way, glaucoma can steal your sight very gradually.

Eye Exam

Many health problems can be diagnosed in the early stages through a vision eye exam or a comprehensive medical eye examination so it is always a good idea to see your eye doctor regularly. Even if you think your vision and eyes are fine, you could be developing an eye disease and not know it.

Contact Lens

Our Optometrist, Dr. Michael Dash, is experienced and certified to properly fit contact lenses that give patients the vision they desire. Refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia can be corrected with contact lenses.
