PRK at EyeSight Hawaii

Voted Best LASIK Eye Center
by the readers of 3 of Hawaii's leading newspapers

PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a type of laser vision correction but unlike LASIK, no corneal flap is made. PRK is a surface treatment. At EyeSight Hawaii, we use the latest technology for our pre-operative exams and vision correction procedures including PRK and LASIK and all surgeries are performed by corneal specialist Dr. John Olkowski.

PRK Pre-Operative Examination

PRK pre-operative examinations are just as important as the actual surgery. During these exams we gather the information that is used for surgery including measuring corneal thickness and pupil size and dilating the pupils to examine the retina. EyeSight Hawaii is the only laser eye center in Hawaii to perform VISX WaveScan measurements before all laser vision correction procedures. The VISX WaveScan maps your entire visual system in an extremely advanced way that was never before possible and creates a "Fingerprint of your vision". The WaveScan system produces a very accurate and objective measurement of each patient’s vision which leads to better results.

PRK Surgery

For our vision correction procedures, Dr. Olkowski uses the VISX Star S4 IR excimer laser which has the only FDA-approved 3-Dimensional tracking system. There is no need to worry if your eye moves because the laser will follow resulting in more safety and accuracy for the patient.

Numbing drops are used prior to surgery then tiny layers of the cornea are removed. The VISX Star S4 IR excimer laser corrects the vision and then a contact lense is put on the eye which will act as a bandage. This contact is removed about 3 days after surgery.

PRK Post-Operative Examinations

Post-operative exams after PRK Surgery are extremely important. This is when we can see how the eyes are healing. If you ever have any concerns about your PRK, we are more than happy to take a look at your eyes at any time.

LASIK versus PRK

Disadvantages of PRK are more post-operative discomfort, a slower recovery and the risk of hazing on the surface of the eye. PRK is most useful for patients with corneas that are too thin for LASIK, or who are otherwise not candidates for LASIK.

EyeSight Hawaii offers complimentary LASIK/PRK consultations. Patients meet our staff and discuss their vision correction options. Call us today and we would be happy to schedule an appointment for you in our main office in Honolulu, our Kahului office in Maui, or on the Big Island in Hilo or Kona and you'll find out if LASIK or PRK is right for you.
